The CIC is excited to witness the completion of World's First Ultra-Strength S960 Steel Footbridge Quadruple Strand Lifting at the Lung Yeuk Tau Interchange.

The footbridge represents the world’s first application of S960 steel in footbridge construction. This breakthrough was made possible through the collaborative research efforts of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The successful application of ultra-high strength S960 steel not only marks a new milestone in Hong Kong’s construction innovation, but also promotes the widespread adoption of high-performance materials across the industry.

Mr. Michael FONG, Director of Civil Engineering and Development, alongside project team members provided an in-depth introduction featuring a live strand jacking operation and a robotic welding demonstration, offering a firsthand look at the cutting-edge innovations shaping the future of bridge construction.

S960 steel offers superior tensile strength and reduced weight compared to conventional steel, enabling a slimmer bridge structure with fewer piles. Its adoption enhances safety, reduces carbon emissions, and improves construction efficiency, resulting in a shortened construction timeline.

Looking ahead, there is great potential for this high-performance material to be adopted in future infrastructure projects across Hong Kong, driving a more efficient and sustainable built environment.
