With the tropical cyclone season approaching, we never overlook any opportunity to enhance safety for working at heights. Recently, our Chairman, Ir Prof. Thomas HO, together with representatives from the Development Bureau and industry experts in scaffolding and lifting operations, visited a Sanfield construction site under Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited to learn about their self-developed smart scaffolding monitoring system, the Tension and Tilting Inspection Engine AI System (TIE․ Ai).

This system employs sensors installed in critical scaffolding components, such as tie-wires, anchor bolts, and the scaffolding structure itself, and applies Internet of Things (hashtag#IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (hashtag#AI) analysis. It takes just five seconds to inspect the whole scaffolding. For example, workers immediately know if the scaffolding is overloaded or if someone has tampered with or removed any tie-wire. If any abnormalities are detected, the system instantly sends a WhatsApp alert to site management for issues like Force Shocking or Excessive Side-Titling at specific locations. Unlike traditional visual inspections, this system enables 24/7 monitoring of scaffolding, ensuring smooth project progress.

Applicable to both bamboo and metal scaffolding, the TIE. Ai System sets a new standard for construction safety. Ir Prof. HO praised the technology as an excellent demonstration and expressed hope that it would soon be included in the Construction Innovation and Technology Fund (hashtag#CITF), allowing more construction sites to benefit and collectively improve the safety culture. When working at heights, every measure of safety is a hard-earned commitment which is a matter of life—there is no room for compromise.
