Safety is never just a slogan — action speaks louder than words. The construction project of Ma Chai Hang Recreation Ground serves as a prime example. Ir Prof. Thomas HO, Chairman of the CIC, together with Mr. Rex WONG, CEO of Kum Shing Group, visited the site to better understand how the project owner’s representative, Ir Eva KONG, General Manager of MTR Corporation, and the main contractor, Ir Simon LIU, Director of Build King Construction Limited, are ensuring construction safety through various means.
One such measure is the use of a “Traffic Lighting System” to monitor safety on site. If the supervisor is absent or the environment falls short of safety requirements, a red light is triggered to alert management immediately. To significantly reduce the risks associated with working at height, the project team pre-installed a fully decked cover at the ceiling of the basketball court, allowing workers to carry out rooftop steel structure work in a safe, grounded manner. Ir Prof. HO praised this worker-centric approach. Other safety features — such as fencing around cherry pickers, installing Cable Trunk System, and proper covering of exposed wiring — further demonstrate the team’s strong commitment to safety, earning high praise.
The management also upholds a “Don’t Walk By” safety culture, encouraging everyone to speak up whenever unsafe situations are identified. Open and effective communication flows between the project owner and subcontractors. In cases where subcontractors repeatedly breach safety regulations despite warnings, they will be asked to leave the project to maintain the overall safety standard.
The project team also utilises BIM and a CDE to overcome numerous challenges throughout the construction process. To date, the site has achieved over 1 million man-hours with zero accidents — a remarkable milestone. Both MTR and Build King agree that safety starts by the management and requires everyone’s participation — all must “get on the field and play their part” to create a truly safe working environment.
Ir Prof. HO concluded by encouraging the project owner, contractor, and subcontractors to continue their close collaboration, uphold their commitment to safety, and ensure the project is completed smoothly and safely.
