The Construction Industry Council-Zero Carbon Park (CIC-ZCP) launched the ZCP Greeen Heroes Award Badges Programme in 2021, aiming to attract and encourage primary and secondary school students to become future leaders in their communities. Through a wide range of decarbonisation activities, including visits, seminars, guided tours, and green workshops covering diverse “carbon neutrality” themes, these initiatives enhance students’ understanding of the importance of sustainable development and “carbon neutrality”, inspiring them to contribute to protecting the planet.

Over the three years, CIC-ZCP has organised more than 200 accredited activities, which categorised into four themes to promote different aspects of low-carbon living: Green Living; Sustainable Development; Recycling, and Energy Knowledge. The membership of ZCP Green Heroes has now exceeded 4,000. At the award ceremony in 2024, Six Green Heroes were honoured “Gold Hero”, signifying their inspiring achievement of participating in 15 or more activities within the year. CIC-ZCP has invited two Gold Hero awardees and their parents to share their motivations for joining the programme.

WONG Tsz-hei, now in his third year of joining the ZCP Green Heroes Programme, advanced from Silver Hero to Gold Hero in 2024. Mrs. WONG, his mother expressed that the Earth’s resources will be exhausted one day. She appreciated the rich variety of workshop offered, which teach her kid to reduce waste and embrace recycling in practice. Mrs. Wong praised CIC-ZCP for arranging different workshops that utilise various materials for upcycling. Her kid has been broadening his perspective on recognising the potential of resources and cherishing the planet’s resources. She also noticed behavioral changes in her child since joining the programme, such as turning off unused appliances at home and minimising air conditioning use.

Meanwhile, Mr. YU who has been guiding his two sons to join the programme for over a year, aimed to help his children engage in environmental protection. He valued the programme’s continuity, which allowed his kids to gradually change their habits in daily life. Mr. YU highlighted two particularly memorable activities. The first one was the ZCP Bird-watching Activity, where participants could observe various bird species at the park, fostering their understanding of biodiversity. The second was the Aquatic Ecosystem Micro-Landscape Workshop, where his kids crafted miniature aqua landscapes to bring home and observe. Both brothers achieved the Gold Hero Award in the past activity year. Yu Cheuk-man, the elder brother, expressed that he was encouraged to adopt a greener lifestyle through the programme and prefers cycling or walking for short-distance trips. He especially enjoyed the spring couplet calligraphy workshop during the Lunar New Year, which unleashed boundless creativity and transformed his creations into festive decorations to share festive joy.

Each year, CIC-ZCP hosts an award ceremony to recognise the efforts of “ZCP Green Heroes” in actively reducing their carbon footprints in their daily life. Looking ahead, CIC-ZCP anticipates honoring more Green Heroes who strive for Hong Kong’s carbon neutrality in the future. If you are interested in joining the ZCP Green Heroes on a green, low-carbon journey, you are welcome to register here.
