Research Embarked on “Establishing a Hong Kong Based Carbon Labelling

Framework for Construction Materials”

The signing ceremony was held at HKU on Tuesday,
26 October 2010, it signified the commitment of both sides
on this important milestone of carbon labelling of materials.
The agreement was signed by Mr. LEE Shing-see,
Chairman of CIC and Professor Paul TAM, Pro-Vice-
Chancellor of HKU.

The research team will examine the implications of the
proposed carbon labelling scheme in the local
construction industry and will identify characteristics of
different categories of construction materials and their
effects on carbon labelling. Based on the results of the
preceding stages, the research team will develop a local-
based model framework to audit the carbon footprint of
vaiours construction materials and devise a benchmarking
mechanism to classify a construction material according to
its emission level.

“We consider green issue is a real issue and we believe that
the construction industry can play a key role,” said Mr. LEE
Shing-see, Chairman of CIC. “The research we commit is
comprehensive for it opens not only a new chapter in green
building standards, but also doors to pragmatic strategies (from left to right) Mr. Christopher TO, Executive Director of CIC;
toward a greener future.” Mr. Peter LEE, Member of Committee on Environment and technology
of CIC; Mr. CHEW Weng-cho, Dean of Faculty of Engineering of HKU;
Prof. Paul TAM, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of HKU; Mr. LEE Shing-see,
The research team is led by Dr. Thomas NG of the
Chairman of CIC; Mr. Conrad WONG, Chairman of the Committee on
Department of Civil Engineering, HKU. A Research Task Environment and Technology of CIC; Prof. KO Jan-Ming, Member of
Force has been set up to monitor the performance and to CIC; and Dr. Thomas NG, Department of Civil Engineeing of HKU
