Golden Decade for Excellence

2017 not only marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to its motherland, but also the 10th anniversary of the Construction Industry Council (CIC). CIC completed a number of important tasks in the past decade to build a solid foundation for the long-term development of the construction industry. We completed the amalgamation of the Construction Industry Training Authority and the Construction Industry Registration Authority in 2008 and 2013. Nowadays, CIC acts as a statutory body representing the construction industry.

Construction industry is a crucial industry to Hong Kong. In 2016, Hong Kong’s total construction projects amounted to HK$236.4 billion, accounting for 9.5% of Hong Kong's GDP. The number of direct employment reaches 336,600, accounting for 8.9% of Hong Kong's labour force. The efficiency and sustainability of the construction industry play an important role to Hong Kong.

Technological innovation is an irresistible trend for social development. In view of the ever-changing architectural design and construction technologies led by the internet and electronic technologies, CIC is now setting up the Construction Innovation and Technology Application Centre to introduce the world’s most advanced building technologies and equipment to Hong Kong, to maintain its status as a pioneer in the international construction arena.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology is internationally recognised as a significant tool to raise the productivity of the construction industry. In 2016, CIC set up the largest BIM Innovation and Development Centre in Hong Kong. The newly established Committee on BIM will gather elites in the industry to boost the BIM development in Hong Kong. In light of the international trend of construction industrialisation, CIC is establishing a committee jointly with the Development Bureau aiming to promote its application in Hong Kong.

The most effective technological innovation always comes from the grassroots. In this technologically advanced era, workers are not satisfied for only being skillful in trades. As a major training institution of the construction work force, CIC strives for continuous improvement and reform to nurture all-rounded construction talent with intelligent knowledge. The newly designated “Construction Diploma Programme” not only offers training to students to acquire skills of relevant disciplines, but also provides opportunities to articulate with the mainstream education pathway, to offer lifelong learning opportunities.

The Construction Industry Sports and Volunteering Programme (CISVP) is set up with an aim to improve the quality of life and public image of construction practitioners. It has helped to build up a healthy and caring culture, to unite the industry stakeholders, as well as creating a new image for the construction industry.

Hong Kong is getting into a “New Eva of Construction”. The construction output in Hong Kong will remain at a high level for the next decade. CIC will work together with all stakeholders to build a better Hong Kong.
